The Earned Income Tax Credit is one of our nation’s best anti-poverty programs, but according to the IRS nearly 23% of all Washingtonians who are eligible, don’t actually claim their tax credit. This leaves billions of dollars on the table each year.
Thurston ABC is promoting EITC awareness because one-third of the EITC population changes each year. We want to get the word out to those who are eligible to file a tax return even if they don’t owe any tax to claim the EITC. It’s money workers can use for groceries, rent, utilities and other bills. Thurston ABC partner, the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, offers free tax preparation services throughout Thurston County. In 2015, the volunteer-run program helped 2,168 low- to moderate- income taxpayers (of all ages) file their taxes for a total of more than $2 million in tax refunds.
This year, low- to moderate- income households could be eligible for up to $6,000 or more in tax refunds when claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

The VISTA member will work with the Thurston Asset Building Coalition (TABC) to conduct outreach and manage and recruit volunteers to support financial literacy and asset building services offered by TABC and its members. The VISTA member will also promote and inform social service providers and community members about existing community resources and benefits that will help people in poverty build their assets, including information health benefits, affordable housing, and job development opportunities. A huge thank you to the 375+ community members who attended “Moving Beyond Poverty: People, Possibilities, & Prosperity” on Tuesday, November 17. Attendees included business leaders, local elected officials, front-line staff and managers from social services agencies, nonprofit board members, state government workers, and other interested community members.
Our goals for “Moving Beyond Poverty” were to increase awareness of the economic challenges that individuals and families face in our region and to help bring about greater understanding of why economic security can be so difficult to attain. We wanted people to walk away from the event with a better understanding of why so many people—including working families—still struggle to make end meet. And we wanted people to understand that improving conditions for working families is the responsibility of our whole community and one of those issues that no single organization can solve by themselves. AARP FOUNDATION TAX-AIDE PROGRAM
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, in partnership with the Thurston Asset Building Coalition, provides free tax preparation assistance to people throughout Thurston County. Our network typically brings more than 2.1 million in dollars to Thurston County in the form a tax refunds. We typically assist hundreds of tax payers to redeem Earned Income Tax Credit, and Child Tax Credit, which are critical financial resources that help families make ends meet. This program serves people of all ages. All tax-aide opportunities require a commitment of at least one four hour shift per week from Feb. 1—April 15, 2016.
Tax-Aide Counselors work under the direction of the District Coordinator to provide tax assistance and preparation service to taxpayers. Counselors maintain the strict confidentiality and protects the security of all taxpayer information and records at all times. Tax Counselors must pass the IRS Voluntary Standards of Conduct test and the Advanced level IRS Tax Preparer test and attend 16-36 hours of training on Saturdays in January. Read More
